EU Sustainable Use Directive for Plant Protection Products is published

The EU Sustainable Use Directive for Plant Protection Products is part of the EU Thematic Strategy for Pesticides and has now been adopted and published.  The Directive establishes a framework for community action to achieve it's objectives.

This was published by the European Commission on 24th November 2009.  The regulation will apply in approximately 18 months time, in June 2011.

The Directive will be implemented into UK legislation within two years of publication. As an industry, it is important to act now.  If we embrace the changes, Best Practice and requirements of the new legislation we can hopefully continue to use pesticides in the amenity sector for many years to come.  Some of the main areas of focus for the Sustainable Use Directive are:

  • Targeted application equipment
  • Product selection
  • Storage and transport
  • Spray and storage records
  • Training
  • Technical advice.
