Casoron G is a broad spectrum granular herbicide containing 6.75% dichlobenil. This active ingredient is absorbed by plant roots and, according to the application rate, will kill annual and perennial weeds and grasses.
For selective weed control in amenity vegetation, roses and ornamental shrubs and trees.
For total weed control on land not intended to bear vegetation; paths, driveways, around buildings, under fence lines and along wall footings.
For aquatic weed control in still waterbodies such as ponds and lakes, or in sluggishly flowing watercourses such as drains and ditches.
When applied to the soil, Casoron G is locked into the top 5cm where it then affects established and germinating plant material. Progressive increases in the rate of use will broaden the spectrum of weeds controlled and lengthen residual control.
When applied to the water surface, Casoron G granules sink down into the mud and disintegrate. The active ingredient is released and is absorbed by the mud. Once absorbed it is taken up by the plant roots causing the death of submerged weeds.
Outdoor Roses: Apply well before any signs of bud movement, usually in early February.
Ornamental Trees and Shrubs: Apply before onset of spring growth, usually in February or early March.
Under conditions of moderate to severe weed infestation, especially of perennial grasses, a late autumn (November) application is recommended. It should be noted, however, that in comparison with normal spring application, persistence into the year following an autumn application will then be reduced.
Alternatively, a split application may be made, by applying two thirds of the recommended rate in the autumn, followed in the spring by a further similar dose.
Residual Activity: When used in accordance with these directions, the residual activity of Casoron G is in the region of approximately 3-6 months at selective rates. If used later than recommended, due to warmer conditions, the residual activity may be lessened.
Apply evenly over the areas to be treated by hand applicator or suitable mechanical spreader.
All ornamental species must be at least 2 years established before treating surrounding soil.
Application can be varied from 56kg to 125kg per hectare according to weed spectrum; equivalent to 56-125g per 10square metres. See table on following pages for weeds controlled.
Weeds are classified according to their relative susceptibility to increasing rates of Casoron G. Progressive increases in the rate of use of Casoron G will broaden the spectrum of weeds controlled and lengthen the persistence of that control. In general, application to a slightly moist soil during cool weather conditions will give best results, particularly if rain follows shortly after application.
1. Avoid local overdosing, especially around the base of plant stems.
2. Under certain circumstances leaf margin chlorosis may occur but this has been shown not to affect growth.
3. Where mulching is practised, apply before mulching.
4. DO NOT APPLY:
In or around glasshouses or near hops.
When plant foliage is wet as granules may then lodge on leaves or in leaf axils and cause damage.
To snow covered ground.
To frozen or waterlogged ground.
To areas under-planted with bulbs, or containing herbaceous stock or annual plants.
To sites within 18 months of sowing or re-planting. If the site has been cultivated within this period and herbicide residues incorporated into the soil, activity of the herbicide may be prolonged and result in a check to certain of the following ornamental species.
Casoron G as a pre-planting treatment.
5. DO NOT disturb treated soil by hoeing etc., or weed control may be impaired.
6. Ensure granules do not fall or blow onto areas other than those intended for treatment.
Application is restricted to the following established ornamental species:
Acer pseudo-platanus (Sycamore)
Aucuba (Japanese Laurel)
Azalea
Bamboo
Berberis
Betula (Birch)

*Application should not be made to Norway Spruce when grown for Christmas tree production.
Insufficient information exists to make a recommendation for the treatment of other ornamental shrubs and trees. With other species only a limited number of specimens should be treated in the first instance.
Apply evenly to the areas to be treated by hand applicator or suitable mechanical spreader.
Application rates
When applied at high rates, Casoron G will give total control of all but a few resistant weed species. The long-term persistence in the top 5cm of soil gives residual activity both against existing weeds and emerging weed seedlings. Casoron G can be used as a total weedkiller on all uncropped land such as paths, driveways, around buildings, under fence lines, along wall footings and on parking and play areas.
The rate varies according to weed species present, see below for WEEDS CONTROLLED to determine application rate required;
125-225kg per hectare, equivalent to 125-225 grammes per 10 square metres.
Apply early in spring as soon as active weed growth commences, usually in March to May. This overcomes the likelihood of subsequent water deoxygenation due to die-back of heavy weed stands.
Apply by hand, air assisted motorised knapsack or other mechanical applicators direct to the water surface or exposed hydrosil. Care should be taken to ensure the even distribution of granules.
1. Casoron G is not recommended in faster flowing water unless the flow can be stopped for a minimum of seven days after application. Flow rate should not exceed 90 metres/hour (25cm/10sec).
2. If fish are known to be present in the water body intended for treatment, the following recommendation for partial treatment with Casoron G should be adopted.
The uptake of the active ingredient by roots in the mud makes it possible to achieve localised control of submerged and emergent weeds. Although the recommended timing is in the early spring, partial treatment can be made somewhat later once it can be seen where localised control is required. But as this may then increase the risk of deoxygenation caused by weed die-back, it is inadvisable to treat more than 10-20% of the water body. Partial treatment is most effective on those weeds having extensive root systems in the mud such as Water-milfoil (Myriophyllum spp), Mares-tail (Hippuris vulgaris) etc. It is NOT effective for control of detached or free floating weeds.
3. Treated water should not be used for irrigation within 14 days of application.
4. Keep granules dry before treatment
5. This product must not be used in water supply systems. These are rain water storage, reservoirs, treatment works and distribution systems that store, treat and supply water for domestic purposes of drinking, washing or cooking.
The use of aquatic herbicides is subject to the requirements set out in the 'Guidelines for the use of herbicides on weeds in or near watercourses and lakes' (reference PB 2289) available FREE from DEFRA Publications, Admail 6000, London SW1A 2XX

* In certain areas this plant, because of its rarity, is of botanical interest and importance. Where it is present, local naturalists should be consulted before treatment.
