Nomix Garlon 4

mapp number
 12081

Top of page
description
An effective selective scrub and brushwood herbicide. Contains 480g/l (44.3% w/w) triclopyr as the 2 - butoxy ethyl ester.

Top of page
uses
Nomix Garlon 4 can be used as a forestry herbicide for scrub clearance
pre-planting and post-planting, basal bark application, frill girdling and trunk injection to control unwanted standing coppice of scrub and cut stump applications to prevent growth of unwanted coppice shoots.

Nomix Garlon 4 can be used on non-crop land such as motorways and railway embankments, roadsides, grassland of no agricultural interest and industrial areas for the control of woody weeds, brambles, nettles and perennial broad-leaved weeds

Top of page

Triclopyr is taken up by leaves, stems, roots and cut surfaces and then translocated throughout the growing plant.

Top of page
advantages
  • Does not harm grasses
  • Planting is possible after six weeks
  • Effective against woody weeds including bramble,
  • rhododendron, gorse and broom
  • Rainfast in under two hours
  • All year round applications
Top of page
directions for use
Nomix Garlon 4 should not be applied via hand-held sprayers fitted with rotary atomisers.

Half fill the spray tank with water, paraffin or diesel oil as appropriate, add the required amount of Nomix Garlon 4, agitate thoroughly and complete filling.

application
Apply by hand-held lance from knapsack or vehicle mounted sprayer as a medium spray in 200-300 l/ha of water.
Applications should be made evenly to all parts of the weed i.e. foliage, branches and stem at a spray pressure of 0.7 - 2.0 bar (see table for rates of use).
When weed cover is dense the water volume should be increased to ensure adequate coverage of the weeds.

knapsackuse
Recommended spray equipment and nozzle sizes.
Use CP15 or CP3 Knapsack sprayer (or equivalent) fitted with either:

1. Blue Polijet nozzle to give 200 litres/ha spray volume
2. Red Polijet nozzle to give 300 litres/ha spray volume

Nozzles should be held at a height to give a swath width of 1.2m  with a walking speed of one metre per second and at an  operating speed pressure of 1 bar. Ensure foliage is completely wetted but do not spray to run-off.

selectokil spot gun summer only
Calibrate Selectokil Spot Gun by the following method for each individual operator:
  1. Adjust gun to deliver a 5ml dose.
  2. Fill knapsack with 5 litres of water and mark this level (filler cap uppermost).
  3. Prime gun.
  4. With nozzle held at spray height over a dry surface squeeze the trigger a number of times until a well defined spot appears. Measure spot diameter, disregarding peripheral droplets.
  5. Using the table right, calculate, using the spot diameter determined under item 4 above and the label application rate for the particular weed, the quantity of Nomix Garlon 4 required per 5ml dose or for the 5 litre knapsack.
  6. Therefore a spot diameter of 1.3m with an application rate of  Nomix Garlon 4 at 6.0 litres per hectare, 0.8 ml of Nomix Garlon 4 is required per 5ml dose or 0.8 litres per 5 litres knapsack.
  7. Fill the knapsack with the herbicide mixture.
  8. Check the spot diameter as in mixture 4 above.
  9. Apply as per label recommendations.

stem treatments

In situations where invader species are to be removed from susceptible crops (see paragraph titled Crop Tolerance) the
following methods of application are recommended:

a) Basal bark - where stems are less than 30cm circumference.
b) Frill girdling - where stems are greater than 30cm circumference.
c) Tree injection - ideal for chemical thinning in susceptible crops.

Top of page

basal bark spray
time of spraying
Application during the late growing season is most effective and application in standing conifer crops should be delayed until late summer when extension growth has ceased.

Top of page
application
Apply by hand-held lance in paraffin or diesel oil to the whole circumference of the bottom 30-45cm of the stem, saturating to run off. Treat the greater height of the stem where bark is thick and penetration difficult.

Top of page

frill girdling

time of spraying
Optimum timing as for basal bark spraying.

Top of page
application
Prepare a "frill", i.e. a ring of downward sloping, overlapping cuts with a light axe or bill hook penetrating the cambium and into the outer sapwood as near the ground level as is convenient just prior to herbicide application. Spray the herbicide in paraffin or diesel oil onto the full circumference of the stem just above the frill so that it runs down into the cuts.

tree injection

time of spraying
Applications may be made at any time of year but best results follow summer or autumn treatment.

Top of page
application
Apply undiluted or in a 1:1 dilution at an injection spacing of  7.5cm around the trunk. Use suitable tree injection equipment, according to manufacturer's instructions (e.g. either a Jim Gen or Hypo Hatchet to make incisions of at least 2.5cm width).
Apply 1ml undiluted or 2ml diluted 1:1 with water.

Top of page

cut stump

time of spraying
Treatment should be applied immediately after felling at any
time of year except during spring sap flow. Application in standing conifer crops should be delayed until late summer when extension growth has ceased.

Top of page
application
Apply in a dilution of paraffin, diesel oil or water. Apply by knapsack sprayer at low pressure or Selectokil Spot Gun with solid stream jets to saturate the newly cut surface of the stump and to the surface of the remaining bark. May also be applied undiluted by paint brush.

rhododendron control
Control of Rhododendron can be variable. Where Rhododendrons are larger than 1.8m in height it is recommended that a cut stump treatment is used. A follow-up shoot treatment may be required.

Top of page
crop tolerance
Nomix Garlon 4 is selective to grasses.
The following species are tolerant to overall sprays of Nomix Garlon 4 applied at up to 4 l/ha during their season of complete dormancy:-
  • Sitka Spruce.
  • Norway Spruce.
  • Pine and Douglas Fir are more sensitive than Spruce with occasional leader damage if sprayed overall.
  • Larch and other conifers and broad-leaved are damaged by overall sprays while in leaf.

Late September application will be tolerated if applied with great care to avoid the foliage of crop trees.
If dormancy is in question use a tree guard and direct spray away from leader shoots.

notesforguidancefirst
  1. A minimum of 6 weeks is required between application of Nomix Garlon 4 and planting.
  2. Do not apply directly to, or allow spray drift to come into contact with, agricultural or horticultural crops, amenity plantings, gardens, ponds, lakes or water courses.
  3. Occasionally, e.g. in hot conditions, vapour drift may occur making it particularly important to assess the risk to neighbouring vegetation.
  4. Control may be reduced if rain falls within two hours of application.
  5. Do not apply from tractor mounted boom sprayers adjacent to susceptible crops or within 6m of ponds, lakes or water courses. Do not apply from handheld sprayers within 2m of ponds, lakes or water courses.
  6. For use via knapsack sprayers the maximum concentrate must not exceed 130ml product per 5 litres of water or 175 ml product per 5 litres of paraffin or diesel oil.
